If a cat has nine lives, then these six cool jazz cats are well into their collective 54; but they’re still far from being put to sleep, as this CD admirably proves. Senior felines Sal Ranniello and myself purred along with very nearly the first litter, back a couple of decades. Both the passing years and many Krazy Kat adventures have turned our whiskers gray! Why, I remember Sal before he was housebroken! Fortunately we’ve both since learned the many uses of the litter box. This latest Cool Cat incarnation was born of a hot version, but organized and managed by Sal strictly for the purpose of performing in schools, mostly of the elementary sort (a level of education for which we’re well qualified). This has turned our world upside-down: we’ve learned to drink milk instead of scotch, and to see the dawning of the day from the other direction. After some years of this wholesome, productive, and important musicmaking, we’ve all felt an urge to return to adult beverages. So Sal assembled the Cats for a sizzling session — the music was as hot as the steaming heat wave on that August day in Nick’s (non-air conditioned) home studio. Donn Doucette, of the impeccable string bass and implacable marching bass drum; Sherman Kahn, of the clairvoyant clarinet and svelte sax; Fred Vigorito, one of the great cornet howlers; multi-tasker Nick DiFabbio (banjo, guitar, vocals, recording,  mixing and mastering engineer; myself on trombone and (very) modest vocals; and Sal himself, the master of deception and percussion — all were truly in heat that day, with the enclosed claw marks to prove it.

Let the music….meow!!
